How to Match Wall Colours With Furniture and Flooring

You’ve found the perfect sofa, the timber floors are in great shape, and now you’re standing in front of a wall of paint swatches wondering why they all look the same. Sound familiar? Choosing wall colours that work with what’s already in your home is one of the trickiest parts of any repaint, but it doesn’t have to be guesswork.

Start With What You Can't Change

Your flooring is the biggest fixed element in any room, so begin there. Look at its undertone before anything else. Warm floors, like honey oak, blackwood or terracotta tiles, sit well with creamy whites, soft greiges and earthy greens. Cooler floors, such as grey-washed boards or concrete-look tiles, pair nicely with crisp whites, pale blues and muted charcoals. Hold your swatch right against the floor, not across the room, because that’s where clashes show up.

Work Your Furniture In

Next, think about your larger pieces. A deep navy couch or a dark timber dining table carries a lot of visual weight, so lighter walls will let it breathe. If your furniture is already pale, you’ve got more freedom to go bolder on the walls. A good rule of thumb is to pick one colour from your furniture or rugs and echo it in a softer tone on the wall. It ties everything together without looking too matchy-matchy.

Try the 60-30-10 Rule

Designers lean on this one a lot, and for good reason. Around 60 per cent of the room should be your main colour (usually the walls), 30 per cent a secondary colour (furniture, curtains), and 10 per cent an accent (cushions, art, a lamp). It keeps a room balanced and stops any single colour from taking over.

Don't Forget About Light

Here in Sydney, natural light changes a lot depending on which way your windows face. North-facing rooms get warm, strong light that can make colours look richer, while south-facing rooms tend to feel cooler and often need a warmer paint to stay cosy. Always test a sample patch and check it in the morning, at midday and at night under your lamps. A colour that looks gorgeous at 10am can look completely different at 7pm.

Think About Flow Between Rooms

If your home is open plan, or rooms lead straight into each other, keep the palette connected. You don’t need the same colour everywhere, but staying within the same family of tones helps the house feel considered rather than patchwork. Consistent white on trim and ceilings is an easy way to link everything.

Combinations That Rarely Fail

  • Light timber floors, warm white walls and natural linen furniture
  • Dark timber floors, soft sage or grey walls and tan leather
  • Grey tiles, off-white walls and charcoal or mustard accents
