10 Interior Painting Trends That Will Transform Homes in 2026

Every year, the way we think about colour shifts a little. After more than 25 years of painting homes and commercial spaces around Sydney, we’ve seen plenty of fads come and go. Some of them stick, and 2026 has a few that we think are here to stay. Here’s what we’re seeing on the ground, and what clients keep asking us for.

  1. Warm, earthy neutrals
Cold greys are on the way out. Think clay, sand, oat and soft terracotta. These colours make a house feel lived in and welcoming, especially in Sydney’s bright natural light.
  2. Deep, moody greens
Olive, bottle green and forest shades are showing up in studies, dining rooms and even bedrooms. They look rich and calm, and they pair beautifully with timber floors.
  3.  Colour-drenched rooms
Instead of white ceilings and a feature wall, more people are painting the walls, trim and ceiling in one colour. It sounds bold, but the result is surprisingly soothing and makes a small room feel intentional.
  4. Soft, muted blues
Dusty blues and blue-greys are replacing the harsh navy of recent years. They work well in bathrooms, bedrooms and home offices where you want a peaceful feel.
  5. Textured and limewash finishes
Flat paint is no longer the only option. Limewash and subtle textured finishes add depth and a hand-finished look that photographs well and feels good in person.
  6. Painted ceilings with personality
Ceilings used to be an afterthought. Now we’re painting them in pale tints or softer shades than the walls to add warmth, especially in rooms with high ceilings.
  7. Two-tone walls
A deeper shade below a dado line, or a colour block that stops halfway up the wall, gives a room structure without needing major renovation work. It’s also very forgiving on scuffed lower walls, which helps in family homes.
  8. Low-VOC and eco-friendly paints
This isn’t just a trend, it’s a shift in what people expect. Families want fewer fumes and healthier air, and modern low-VOC paints now perform as well as the traditional ones, with far less smell.
  9. Matte and satin finishes over high gloss
Soft, velvety matte walls hide imperfections and look elegant. For kitchens, bathrooms and trim, a durable satin gives you easy cleaning without the shiny look.
  10. Painted joinery and cabinetry
Rather than ripping out tired kitchens or built-ins, homeowners are repainting them. A proper prep and a quality finish can make old cabinetry look brand new at a fraction of the cost.

A few tips before you pick a colour

Always test samples on the wall and look at them morning and evening. Light changes everything. Think about the flow between rooms, not just each space alone. And remember that the best paint job starts with good preparation. Patching, sanding and priming matter just as much as the colour you choose.
